Robert Cushman - Life in England

Life in England

In 1603, at about age 26, he was living in Canterbury, County Kent, as a servant to George Masters. In 1605, he became a freeman of Canterbury, the record of admission describing him as Robert Couchman, a freeman by apprenticeship to George Masters.

Robert apprenticed to be a grocer in Canterbury. In November 1603 while an apprentice, he was brought before the church court for saying, he will not come to his parish church, because he cannot be edified and saith he can and will defend it by the word of God. He was excommunicated but eventually was granted absolution.

Famous quotes containing the words life and/or england:

Oh sure, everyone goes back to the earth at some point, but life itself is a thread that is never broken, never lost. Do you know why? Because each man makes a knot in the thread during his lifetime: it is the work he has done and that’s what gives life to life in the long stretch of time: the usefulness of man on this earth.
    Jacques Roumain (1907–1945)

Every American travelling in England gets his own individual sport out of the toy passenger and freight trains and the tiny locomotives, with their faint, indignant, tiny whistle. Especially in western England one wonders how the business of a nation can possibly be carried on by means so insufficient.
    Willa Cather (1876–1947)
