Other Religions

In Hinduism, Rishabha is the eighth Avatar of Vishnu of the twenty-two incarnations listed in the Bhagavata Purana.

Many epithets that have been applied to Lord Shiva have also been applied to Rishabha; these include Aghora, Ishana, Sadyojata, and Vamadeva.

In one legend, there is a Saint Rishabh who came to Bhadrayuva unexpectedly, and taught him a great mantra called the Shivakavacha.

Rishabha is mentioned in the text of the Bhagavata Purana as an avatar of Vishnu.

The Bhagavata Purana says:

Sanskrit: अष्टमे मेरुदेव्यां तु नाभेर्जात उरूक्रमः. दर्शयन वर्म धीराणां सर्वाश्रमनमस्कृतम्
Aṣṭamē Mērudēvyāṁ tu Nābhērjāta urūkramaḥ. Darśayana varma dhīrāṇāṁ sarvāśramanamaskr̥tam
"In the womb of Mērudēvi, wife of Nābhi, Rishaba had his eighth avatar. He showed himself in a form that is to be worshipped by those in any (stage of life."

The Bhāgavata calls him शरीर मात्र परिग्रह Śarīra mātra parigraha "Body his only possession", गगन परिधानः Gagana paridhānaḥ "wearing the sky", and वातरशना Vātaraśanā "wearing the wind".

Famous quotes containing the word religions:

The main business of religions is to purify, control, and restrain that excessive and exclusive taste for well-being which men acquire in times of equality.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)

The ancients adorned their sarcophagi with the emblems of life and procreation, and even with obscene symbols; in the religions of antiquity the sacred and the obscene often lay very close together. These men knew how to pay homage to death. For death is worthy of homage as the cradle of life, as the womb of palingenesis.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)
