Personal Life

Porcello, a resident of Chester Township, New Jersey, was inducted into both the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society at Seton Hall Prep. He graduated with a four-year cumulative GPA of 3.94. His older brother Zach is a pitching coach at Seton Hall University. His younger brother Jake is a 2009 graduate of Seton Hall Prep and is currently a pitcher at Seton Hall University and was drafted by the Tigers in the 48th round of the 2009 draft. He received pitching training from the current Morristown Beard School Baseball pitching coach, Mike Sturgeon.

Porcello is the paternal grandson of Sam Dente, who played for the Cleveland Indians in the 1954 World Series.

In his Tiger career through 2012, Porcello wore uniform number 48. When the Tigers acquired outfielder Torii Hunter — who also wears number 48 — in the 2012-13 offseason, Hunter made a monetary offer for the number. Porcello instead asked Hunter to donate the money he offered to victims of Hurricane Sandy, and Rick plans to wear number 21 in the 2013 season.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:

It has no share in the leadership of thought: it does not even reflect its current. It does not create beauty: it apes fashion. It does not produce personal skill: our actors and actresses, with the exception of a few persons with natural gifts and graces, mostly miscultivated or half-cultivated, are simply the middle-class section of the residuum.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming that comes when you finish the life of the emotions and of personal relations; and suddenly you find—at the age of fifty, say—that a whole new life has opened before you, filled with things you can think about, study, or read about.... It is as if a fresh sap of ideas and thoughts was rising in you.
    Agatha Christie (1891–1976)
