On May 16, 2011, Berg announced that he would run for the United States Senate seat being vacated by Democratic incumbent Kent Conrad.

Election night results indicated that Berg had lost to former state Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp by 2,994 votes. As the difference was less than 1% of the ballots cast, Berg declined to immediately concede. The next day, however, Berg acknowledged his Democratic opponent's victory.

Famous quotes containing the words senate and/or election:

We have been here over forty years, a longer period than the children of Israel wandered through the wilderness, coming to this Capitol pleading for this recognition of the principle that the Government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed. Mr. Chairman, we ask that you report our resolution favorably if you can but unfavorably if you must; that you report one way or the other, so that the Senate may have the chance to consider it.
    Anna Howard Shaw (1847–1919)

The election makes me think of a story of a man who was dying. He had only two minutes to live, so he sent for a clergyman and asked him, “Where is the best place to go to?” He was undecided about it. So the minister told him that each place had its advantages—heaven for climate, and hell for society.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
