Return replaced Bright Promise on NBC's schedule at 3:30 PM/2:30 Central; despite its attempts to continue the 1960s primetime phenomenon, it performed no better than its predecessor against ABC's One Life to Live or CBS' The Edge of Night. Worse still, in July 1973, CBS debuted its Match Game at that slot, and within months it became daytime's top-rated program. In response, NBC pulled Return on January 4 in favor of How to Survive a Marriage, another unsuccessful serial.

“There is one great fact, characteristic of this our nineteenth century, a fact which no party dares deny. On the one hand, there have started into life industrial and scientific forces which no epoch of former human history had ever suspected. On the other hand, there exist symptoms of decay, far surpassing the horrors recorded of the latter times of the Roman empire. In our days everything seems pregnant with its contrary.”
