In Mexico, after presenting the most competitive medical exam in Latin America,"annual residency exam" (Spanish, examen nacional de residencias medicas) the physician needs to apply to each hospital and program. The usual duration of the programs is 4 years for Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Family Medicine. Specialized fields like surgery, obstetrics and gynecology for example requires of 4 years of training. And after finishing the residency the applicant can continue the medical training as a "sub-specialist" (in Mexico the term fellow is not used) and the usual duration of the training is 2 to 5 years depending the field of study.
