Renshaw Cell - Target of Neurotoxins

Target of Neurotoxins

Renshaw cells are also the target of the toxin of Clostridium tetani, a spore-forming anaerobic bacterium that lives in the soil. When wounds are contaminated with C. tetani, the toxin travels to the spinal cord where it inhibits the release of glycine from Renshaw cells. As a result, alpha motor neurons become hyperactive, and muscles constantly contract.

Famous quotes containing the words target of and/or target:

All of women’s aspirations—whether for education, work, or any form of self-determination—ultimately rest on their ability to decide whether and when to bear children. For this reason, reproductive freedom has always been the most popular item in each of the successive feminist agendas—and the most heavily assaulted target of each backlash.
    Susan Faludi (20th century)

But this we know, the obstacle that checked
And tripped the body, shot the spirit on
Further than target ever showed or shone.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
