Relics (Star Trek: The Next Generation) - Notes

Notes

  • This episode marks the fifth time that an Original Series cast member appeared during The Next Generation's series run; the other four being "Encounter at Farpoint" (DeForest Kelley), “Haven” (Majel Barrett, as Deanna Troi's mother Lwaxana), "Sarek" (Mark Lenard) and "Unification I & II" (Mark Lenard and Leonard Nimoy).
  • A fan of the original series, script-writer Moore added a number of lines to the script that reference original series episodes.
  • Data's serving Scotty a drink he can identify only as "green" (Aldebaran whiskey in this episode) is a reference to the Original Series episode "By Any Other Name".
  • Scotty mentions the events of The Naked Time to La Forge while they are in Engineering.
  • In order for the Enterprise to escape, the Jenolen had to hold the doors open using the shields. This should have prevented Scotty and Geordi from being transported off the ship. Also, when the Enterprise destroys the Jenolen, it is clear that the shields are still active. However, as shown in the movie "Star Trek: Generations," if the "attacking" ship has the proper shield frequency, it is possible to bypass the shields as if they were not in place, which might also explain how they were able to use the transporter as well.
  • After Commander Riker identifies himself as being from the Enterprise, Scotty says he bet Jim Kirk dug the Enterprise out of mothballs and headed the rescue mission himself. However, in the movie Star Trek Generations, Scotty, along with others, witnesses what he thinks is the death of Captain Kirk on the Enterprise-B. This would have had to occur before Scotty's disappearance. This makes the film and this line of dialogue contradict each other. James Doohan was not originally a part of the Generations film cast, he was a last minute replacement for Leonard Nimoy. The official Star Trek web site attributes the conflicting line of dialogue in "Relics" to the character being momentarily disoriented after having been stuck inside the transporter system of the Jenolen for three quarters of a century. The real reason is that although "Relics" is set decades after the events in the film, it was actually shot a few years before Generations was produced. This issue is discussed in a DVD-exclusive scene from the Family Guy episode, "Not All Dogs Go to Heaven", that actually had the cast of The Next Generation as themselves.
  • When La Forge and Scotty are chatting at the end of the episode, they make reference to the Season 4 episode "Galaxy's Child".
  • Freeman Dyson stated upon viewing the episode that he generally liked it.

Famous quotes containing the word notes:

In trying to understand the appeal of best-sellers, it is well to remember that whistles can be made sounding certain notes which are clearly audible to dogs and other of the lower animals, though man is incapable of hearing them.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)

‘Tis the gift to be simple ‘tis the gift to be free
‘Tis the gift to come down where you ought to be
And when we find ourselves in the place just right
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
—Unknown. ‘Tis the Gift to Be Simple.

    The night is itself sleep
And what goes on in it, the naming of the wind,
Our notes to each other, always repeated, always the same.
