Rednecks and Broomsticks - Cultural References

Cultural References

The title refers to the 1971 Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Neve Campbell (who is a guest star in this episode) is also famous for starring in The Craft, a film with a similar theme to this episode. The way Cletus takes the family out of the frozen lake is similar to Deliverance and Misery. Also the sequence with Homer and Cletus looking for moonshine with four different screens is a parody of Sideways. The Bonk-It toy is a parody of the Bop It toy. On the Wiccapedia home page, one link says Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The last scene in the episode of Lisa figure skating on the frozen water is also reminiscent of the final scene in the film To Die For.

Famous quotes containing the word cultural:

A culture may be conceived as a network of beliefs and purposes in which any string in the net pulls and is pulled by the others, thus perpetually changing the configuration of the whole. If the cultural element called morals takes on a new shape, we must ask what other strings have pulled it out of line. It cannot be one solitary string, nor even the strings nearby, for the network is three-dimensional at least.
    Jacques Barzun (b. 1907)
