Red House Park - The Red House

Within the park is The Red House, a country house built in the 1841 for the then Liberal MP for Walsall, Robert Wellbeloved Scott, and stood in his 27-acre (11 ha) estate. Since 17 June 1996 it has been a Grade II listed building, statutory list reference: 5/110011 (179). It uses red bricks in Flemish Bond with stone dressings. It has a hipped roof with Welsh slates and brick chimneys.

Previously used as a convalescent home, the house is now owned by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council and leased to the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, but is in a poor state of repair. The council proposes to sell it for development as private apartments, but this is opposed by nearby residents.

Famous quotes containing the words red and/or house:

    Here thou art painted in the dress
    Of an inhuman murderess;
    Examining upon our hearts
    Thy fertile shop of cruel arts:
    Engines more keen than ever yet
    Adorned tyrant’s cabinet,
    Of which the most tormenting are
    Black eyes, red lips, and curled hair.
    Andrew Marvell (1621–1678)

    Our law very often reminds one of those outskirts of cities where you cannot for a long time tell how the streets come to wind about in so capricious and serpent-like a manner. At last it strikes you that they grew up, house by house, on the devious tracks of the old green lanes; and if you follow on to the existing fields, you may often find the change half complete.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)
