Reconciling Poetics and Ethics in Architecture Conference 2007

An international conference hosted by the McGill University School of Architecture and the Canadian Centre for Architecture on September 13 to 15, 2007 in Montreal.

Notable scholars and architects such as Lily Chi, Marco Frascari, Gregory Henriquez, Michael Jemtrud, Donald Kunze, David Leatherbarrow, Indra Kagis McEwen, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Alberto Pérez-Gómez presented on various themes in an attempt to tease out points of contact between the poetics and ethics in architecture. Centred around the question, "How can architects reconcile their wish to design a beautiful world and the imperative to create a better place for society?"

The conference was co-organized by Lian Chang, Diana Cheng, and Peter Olshavsky.

Famous quotes containing the words reconciling, ethics, architecture and/or conference:

In that reconciling of God and Mammon which Mrs. Grantly had carried on so successfully in the education of her daughter, the organ had not been required, and had become withered, if not defunct, through want of use.
    Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)

The most powerful lessons about ethics and morality do not come from school discussions or classes in character building. They come from family life where people treat one another with respect, consideration, and love.
    Neil Kurshan (20th century)

I don’t think of form as a kind of architecture. The architecture is the result of the forming. It is the kinesthetic and visual sense of position and wholeness that puts the thing into the realm of art.
    Roy Lichtenstein (b. 1923)

The peace conference must not adjourn without the establishment of some ordered system of international government, backed by power enough to give authority to its decrees. ... Unless a league something like this results at our peace conference, we shall merely drop back into armed hostility and international anarchy. The war will have been fought in vain ...
    Virginia Crocheron Gildersleeve (1877–1965)
