Illinois recognizes same-sex unions in the form of civil unions that provide same-sex couples the rights of marriage under state law. Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation on January 31, 2011, that legalized civil unions in Illinois as of June 1, 2011. The law also allows opposite-sex couples to form civil unions and provides state recognition of substantially similar legal relationships, including same-sex marriages and civil unions, entered into in other jurisdictions. Same-sex marriage legislation has been introduced in successive sessions of the General Assembly since 2007. Legislation was filed in both houses in January 2013 and passed in the Senate in February.
