Reclaiming Our Heritage

Reclaiming Our Heritage is a free living history celebration held at the Northwestern Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers Historic District on the campus of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The multi-era encampment, which has taken place annually since 2002, is on hiatus for 2013.

Reclaiming Our Heritage is hosted by the staff of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center and sponsored by the Friends of Reclaiming Our Heritage. The VA Medical Center was one of the three original branches of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers established after the Civil War. In June 2011, the historic district was designated a National Historic Landmark. The campus also contains the VA Benefits Administration and Wood National Cemetery.

Famous quotes containing the words reclaiming and/or heritage:

We have needed to define ourselves by reclaiming the words that define us. They have used language as weapons. When we open ourselves to what they say and how they say it, our narrow prejudices evaporate and we are nourished and armed.
    Selma James (b. 1930)

It seems to me that upbringings have themes. The parents set the theme, either explicitly or implicitly, and the children pick it up, sometimes accurately and sometimes not so accurately.... The theme may be “Our family has a distinguished heritage that you must live up to” or “No matter what happens, we are fortunate to be together in this lovely corner of the earth” or “We have worked hard so that you can have the opportunities we didn’t have.”
    Calvin Trillin (20th century)
