The Prison Today

HMP Reading is a young offender Institution and remand centre, holding males aged 18 to 21. Accommodation at the prison consists of a mixture of single and double occupancy cells contained on three Victorian style wings. There is also a further residential unit(Kennet wing) of single occupancy cells for low security 'open' prisoners.

The Remand centre Library service is run by Reading Borough Libraries. There are two education departments at Reading prison, one run by the Prison service and one by Milton Keynes College.

Famous quotes containing the words prison and/or today:

Whensoever any affliction assails me, me thinks I have the keyes of my prison in mine owne hand, and no remedy presents it selfe so soone to my heart, as mine own sword. Often meditation of this hath wonne me to a charitable interpretation of their action, who dy so: and provoked me a little to watch and exagitate their reasons, which pronounce so peremptory judgements upon them.
    John Donne (c. 1572–1631)

In times past there were rituals of passage that conducted a boy into manhood, where other men passed along the wisdom and responsibilities that needed to be shared. But today we have no rituals. We are not conducted into manhood; we simply find ourselves there.
    Kent Nerburn (20th century)
