Post-retirement
General Davis died of a heart attack at the age of 88 on September 3, 2003. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in College Park, Georgia. The Funeral Detail and Marine Corps Honor Guard was personally commanded by General Michael W. Hagee, the 33rd Commandant of the Marine Corps.
