Ray Blanchard - Male-to-female Gender Dysphoria

Male-to-female Gender Dysphoria

Blanchard coined the term "autogynephilia" to describe men with an erotic desire to be women and hypothesized that all gender dysphoria in biological males are variants of only two types: homosexual gender dysphoria and non-homosexual gender dysphoria. The former are attracted to men, while the latter are attracted to the idea of themselves being a woman. Within the transsexual community, there has been much controversy surrounding Blanchard's ideas.

Blanchard supports public funding of sex reassignment surgery as an appropriate treatment for transsexual people, as he believes the available evidence supports that the surgery helps them live more comfortably and happily, with high satisfaction rates.

Famous quotes containing the word gender:

Most women of [the WW II] generation have but one image of good motherhood—the one their mothers embodied. . . . Anything done “for the sake of the children” justified, even ennobled the mother’s role. Motherhood was tantamount to martyrdom during that unique era when children were gods. Those who appeared to put their own needs first were castigated and shunned—the ultimate damnation for a gender trained to be wholly dependent on the acceptance and praise of others.
