Relationship With Sikhism

Ravidasis claim that their religion was created after they were excluded from Sikh gurdwaras in Punjab. There are many similarities with mainstream Sikhism and indeed temple worship is almost identical, except for the Ravidasi use of Aarti using the words of Ravidas' Aarti hymn. The primary difference is the reveration of Ravidas as their main prophet or teacher.

The Ravidasi community insists they are separate from Sikhism (because Guru Ravidass, not the Guru Granth Sahib is their spiritual Satguru) and in terms of partaking in the hierarchy of formal Sikhdom this is largely true. However, their reveration for Sikh scripture, belief in some Sikh principles and similarities in Sikh worship, firmly render them as a part of the Sikh religious domain.

Famous quotes containing the words relationship with and/or relationship:

Guilty, guilty, guilty is the chant divorced parents repeat in their heads. This constant reminder remains just below our consciousness. Nevertheless, its presence clouds our judgment, inhibits our actions, and interferes in our relationship with our children. Guilt is a major roadblock to building a new life for yourself and to being an effective parent.
    Stephanie Marston (20th century)

Strange and predatory and truly dangerous, car thieves and muggers—they seem to jeopardize all our cherished concepts, even our self-esteem, our property rights, our powers of love, our laws and pleasures. The only relationship we seem to have with them is scorn or bewilderment, but they belong somewhere on the dark prairies of a country that is in the throes of self-discovery.
    John Cheever (1912–1982)
