Ashwin made his debut against Andhra Pradesh in Twenty20 cricket. He plays first-class cricket for Tamil Nadu and has played in the Duleep Trophy for South Zone.
He plays for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
Ashwin was the highest wicket taker in the 2010 Champions League Twenty20, playing for Chennai Super Kings, with 13 wickets in the tournament. He was adjudged Player of the Tournament and also won the Golden Wicket. During the IPL 2011 auction on 5 and 6 January 2011, Ashwin was retained by Chennai Super Kings for an amount of US$80.HE played a brillant role in the IPL final of 2011.He dismissed Chris Gayle at very early overs,which in result Chennai won the IPL cup 2011. Presently, he holds the record for the most economical bowler in Indian Premier League history, with an economy rate of 6.12.
