Governorship
After the assassination of Salmaan Taseer, on 4 January 2011, the post of the Governor of Punjab became vacant. Khan became caretaker governor. Under the constitution of Pakistan, the speaker of the Upper House or Lower House automatically becomes caretaker governor of any province if the governor dies, becomes ill, or is unable to exercise the office.
