The Future
The future of the railways is secure until 2017, when the existing National Rail South Western franchise runs out. There are numerous plans for the island's rail system, including:
- the extension of steam services from Smallbrook Junction to Ryde St John's Road station
- conversion of the Island Line to a tramway and extending into Shanklin town centre
- extension of steam railway to reach Newport
- extension of Island Line into Ventnor along the old route (first considered in 1967)
- extension of the Island Line to Gosport, Hampshire via a new Solent tunnel

Famous quotes containing the word future:
“It is a time when ones spirit is subdued and sad, one knows not why; when the past seems a storm-swept desolation, life a vanity and a burden, and the future but a way to death.”
—Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (18351910)
“We accept and welcome ... as conditions to which we must accommodate ourselves, great inequality of environment; the concentration of business, industrial and commercial, in the hands of a few; and the law of competition between these, as being not only beneficial, but essential for the future progress of the race.”
—Andrew Carnegie (18351919)
