Raffi Hovannisian - Minister of Foreign Affairs

Minister of Foreign Affairs

On November 7, 1991 Raffi Hovannisian was appointed as the first Foreign Minister of the Republic of Armenia. He served in that position until October 16, 1992, when he was forced to resign, because he and President Levon Ter-Petrosyan took two very different approaches to Armenian national issues.

On March 2, 1992 as the Foreign Minister of Armenia, Hovannisian raised the Armenian tricolor at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In September 1992 the Los Angeles Times wrote "a recent poll in the Armenian newspaper Epokha found that he enjoyed a mind-boggling 96% approval rating, more than President Ter-Petrosyan."

Famous quotes containing the words minister, foreign and/or affairs:

Before any woman is a wife, a sister or a mother she is a human being. We ask nothing as women but everything as human beings.
Ida C. Hultin, U.S. minister and suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 17, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

Our day of dependence, our long apprenticeship to the learning of other lands, draws to a close. The millions, that around us are rushing into life, cannot always be fed on the sere remains of foreign harvests.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

To grant woman an equality with man in the affairs of life is contrary to every tradition, every precedent, every inheritance, every instinct and every teaching. The acceptance of this idea is possible only to those of especially progressive tendencies and a strong sense of justice, and it is yet too soon to expect these from the majority.
    Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906)
