RAF Stornoway - The Cold War

The Cold War

During the Cold War the station was home to an RAF signals unit whose purpose was classified. The station was also subject to upgrading during this time, including the extension of the main runway to accept Panavia Tornado aircraft.

The station was finally closed on 31 March 1998. After this some of the buildings were sold off, one becoming a Christian school, and others including the Nissen hut accommodation blocks were demolished. The runway remains in use as part of Stornoway Airport, and other parts of the site are used as a ground for holding stunt shows and vehicle exhibitions.

Famous quotes containing the words cold and/or war:

In the cold of Europe, under prudish northern fogs, except when slaughter is afoot, you only glimpse the crawling cruelty of your fellow men. But their rottenness rises to the surface as soon as they are tickled by the hideous fevers of the tropics.
    Louis-Ferdinand Céline (1894–1961)

How many people in the United States do you think will be willing to go to war to free Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania?
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)
