Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre

The Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre (RUNMC) (Dutch: Universitair Medisch Centrum St Radboud), is the teaching hospital affiliated with the Radboud University Nijmegen, in the city of Nijmegen in the eastern-central part of The Netherlands.

The Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre was formed in 1999 by a merger of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Nijmegen (AZN) (Academic Hospital of Nijmegen) and the medical faculty of the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen (Catholic University of Nijmegen), now the Radboud University Nijmegen, forming an academic health science centre. Thus, it is a semi-independent medical university and hospital, which is not directly linked to the Radboud University.

It is one of the largest and leading hospitals of The Netherlands, providing supraregional tertiary care for residents of a large part of the eastern section of The Netherlands.

The medical center employs 8840 employees (6639 FT), and offers educational services to 1925 medical students, 505 medical bioscience students, and 447 dentistry students. The medical center has 953 beds.

Special units include:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Neonatal and pediatric surgery and intensive care
  • Pediatric oncology
  • Level I trauma center (including helicopter service)
  • Infectious diseases
  • a craniofacial team, specialised in cleft lip and palate

Famous quotes containing the words university, medical and/or centre:

Within the university ... you can study without waiting for any efficient or immediate result. You may search, just for the sake of searching, and try for the sake of trying. So there is a possibility of what I would call playing. It’s perhaps the only place within society where play is possible to such an extent.
    Jacques Derrida (b. 1930)

Often, we expect too much [from a nanny]. We want someone like ourselves—bright, witty, responsible, loving, imaginative, patient, well-mannered, and cheerful. Also, we want her to be smart, but not so smart that she’s going to get bored in two months and leave us to go to medical school.
    Louise Lague (20th century)

The great God absolute! The centre and circumference of all democracy! His omnipresence, our divine equality!
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
