Opinion of The Court
The Court found in favour of Lifchus and ordered a new trial. The opinion of the Court was written by Cory J. with a minority opinion by L'Heureux-Dubé J.
Cory used the case as an opportunity to describe the significance of the "reasonable doubt" standard. He described it as a fundamental principle in criminal justice and was intertwined with the presumption of innocence. As such, the description of the meaning to the jury must be done very carefully.

Famous quotes containing the words opinion of, opinion and/or court:
“What we seek is the reign of law, based upon the consent of the governed and sustained by the organized opinion of mankind.”
—Woodrow Wilson (18561924)
“Let a man learn to look for the permanent in the mutable and fleeting; let him learn to bear the disappearance of things he was wont to reverence; without losing his reverence; let him learn that he is here, not to work, but to be worked upon; and that, though abyss open under abyss, and opinion displace opinion, all are at last contained in the Eternal Cause.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“But such as you and I do not seem old
Like men who live by habit. Every day
I ride with falcon to the rivers edge
Or carry the ringed mail upon my back,
Or court a woman; neither enemy,
Game-bird, nor woman does the same thing twice....”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
