R179 (New York City Subway Car)

The R179 is a future New York City Subway car ordered for the B Division. These cars will replace all of the existing R32 and R42 cars, which are running well past the average service life of a New York City Subway car, and expand the fleet for the Second Avenue Subway. The contract to build these cars has been awarded to Bombardier Transportation, who will build the cars in its Plattsburgh, New York, facility.

Famous quotes containing the words york, city and/or subway:

To deny the need for comprehensive child care policies is to deny a reality—that there’s been a revolution in American life. Grandma doesn’t live next door anymore, Mom doesn’t work just because she’d like a few bucks for the sugar bowl.
Editorial, The New York Times (September 6, 1983)

There are two places in the world where men can most effectively disappear—the city of London and the South Seas.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

In New York—whose subway trains in particular have been “tattooed” with a brio and an energy to put our own rude practitioners to shame—not an inch of free space is spared except that of advertisements.... Even the most chronically dispossessed appear prepared to endorse the legitimacy of the “haves.”
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. “Cleaning and Cleansing,” Myths and Memories (1986)
