Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Ashbourne - History

History

In 1585, QEGS was founded as a voluntary controlled school in Church Street, Ashbourne by Thomas Carter of the Middle Temple. Although Sir Thomas Cokayne, High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1530, did help fund the school, he is frequently incorrectly credited as the main founder. The original building still exists today.

The school relocated to its current site on The Green Road in 1909. In 1973 QEGS took over the Ashbourne County Secondary School on Old Derby Road, but they both remained as two separate sites. QEGS was awarded technology specialist status in 2005, and a new technology block was built with the funding received. On 1 August 2011 it converted to Academy Status and became an Independent State School but still serves the same catchment area and has the same admissions procedures.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

If man is reduced to being nothing but a character in history, he has no other choice but to subside into the sound and fury of a completely irrational history or to endow history with the form of human reason.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)

Humankind has understood history as a series of battles because, to this day, it regards conflict as the central facet of life.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

The history of any nation follows an undulatory course. In the trough of the wave we find more or less complete anarchy; but the crest is not more or less complete Utopia, but only, at best, a tolerably humane, partially free and fairly just society that invariably carries within itself the seeds of its own decadence.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)
