Governance
Local governance existed during the French occupation of Malta (1798–1800) however this was a limited and short-lived experiment. It was only in the 1990s that local councils were introduced in Malta with the first local council elections in Qormi taking place in 1994. Subsequent elections took place in 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2007.
