Pylades - in Modern Literature

In Modern Literature

In Victor Hugo's novel "Les Misérables", the relationship between Enjolras and Grantaire is compared to that of Pylades and Orestes. Similarly, in Alexandre Dumas' La Reine Margot, the devotion shared between friends (and one-time foes) Annibal de Coconnas and Lerac de la Mole is compared to that of Pylades and Orestes, as well as that of Nisus and Euryalus, Castor and Pollux, Achilles and Patroclus, as well as various other pairs of brothers, friends and lovers in classical mythology. Their friendship mirrors both mythological relationships at different points in the novel.

Famous quotes containing the words modern and/or literature:

A building is akin to dogma; it is insolent, like dogma. Whether or no it is permanent, it claims permanence, like a dogma. People ask why we have no typical architecture of the modern world, like impressionism in painting. Surely it is obviously because we have not enough dogmas; we cannot bear to see anything in the sky that is solid and enduring, anything in the sky that does not change like the clouds of the sky.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)

I am not fooling myself with dreams of immortality, know how relative all literature is, don’t have any faith in mankind, derive enjoyment from too few things. Sometimes these crises give birth to something worth while, sometimes they simply plunge one deeper into depression, but, of course, it is all part of the same thing.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)
