Punjabi Dhabha - Origin

Origin

Punjab has bequeathed this institution of Dhaba to the world. The Dhaba moves wherever a Punjabi goes would be the correct thing to state about its origin.

The first Punjabhi Dhaba probably started with the linking of the cities of India by highways (national, state and village roads). Though no records can be cited to the first Punjabi Dhaba, it can reasonably be assumed that such restaurants must have first flourished along the GT Road between Peshawar (now in Pakistan) in Punjab passing through Amritsar, Delhi to Calcutta.

There is now a large network of the Punjabi community since it is from among this group that many have migrated to far lands. One joke goes that even if one were to visit the Moon, one might find a Punjabi Dhaba..

Famous quotes containing the word origin:

Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed,—a, to me, equally mysterious origin for it.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

For, though the origin of most of our words is forgotten, each word was at first a stroke of genius, and obtained currency, because for the moment it symbolized the world to the first speaker and to the hearer. The etymologist finds the deadest word to have been once a brilliant picture.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Each structure and institution here was so primitive that you could at once refer it to its source; but our buildings commonly suggest neither their origin nor their purpose.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
