Puerto Rican Socialist Party - Demise

Demise

The PSP name was maintained during the 1980s but the organization ceased political activity among the working class. The PSP was formally disbanded in 1993. Some of its members went to collaborate with the Popular Democratic Party (PDP), one of the two main parties and the one which receives most votes opposing Puerto Rico's annexation to the US. The other main party is the New Progressive Party (NPP), representing the pro-annexation vote. The PPD defends the present Commonwealth or "Estado Libre Asociado" of Puerto Rico, considered a colonial status by many.

Mari Brás and other former PSP leaders later became involved in the Hostosian National Independence Movement (MINH), a smaller organization. Gallisá became active in a radio program of political discussion.
