The XU8 had a displacement of 1.8 L (1,775 cc), with a bore of 83 mm (3.3 in) and a stroke of 82 mm (3.2 in). A single motor was produced in a few slightly different versions, the 16-valve DOHC turbocharged XU8 T, which was fitted to the 205 Turbo 16.
