Providence & Worcester Railroad Bridge

Providence & Worcester Railroad Bridge

The Providence and Worcester Railroad Bridge is a swing truss bridge crossing the Connecticut River in Middletown, Connecticut. It carried the New York and Boston Air Line Railroad over the river to Portland, Connecticut. The bridge is used by the Providence & Worcester Railroad to serve two customers in Portland. Since the bridge is usually left open, it may appear inactive. However, trains regularly cross the river carrying paper products and demolition debris. It is visible from Route 9.

The bridge was featured prominently in the video for the 1993 Billy Joel hit "The River of Dreams". Joel and three backup singers appear throughout the video standing on the western span of the bridge, with the open center section of the bridge behind them.

Famous quotes containing the words providence, railroad and/or bridge:

Other nations have tried to check ... the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.
    John Louis O’Sullivan (1813–1895)

... no other railroad station in the world manages so mysteriously to cloak with compassion the anguish of departure and the dubious ecstasies of return and arrival. Any waiting room in the world is filled with all this, and I have sat in many of them and accepted it, and I know from deliberate acquaintance that the whole human experience is more bearable at the Gare de Lyon in Paris than anywhere else.
    M.F.K. Fisher (1908–1992)

It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.

And you O my soul where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them,
Till the bridge you will need be form’d, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O, my soul.
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)
