Project Vela

Project Vela was a project by the United States to develop and implement methods to monitor compliance with the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty. The development work was primarily performed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency and was overseen by the United States Air Force.

Project Vela consisted of three elements: Vela Uniform to monitor seismic signals to detect underground nuclear testing, Vela Sierra to detect atmospheric nuclear testing and Vela Hotel to detect nuclear testing from space.

Famous quotes containing the word project:

They had their fortunes to make, everything to gain and nothing to lose. They were schooled in and anxious for debates; forcible in argument; reckless and brilliant. For them it was but a short and natural step from swaying juries in courtroom battles over the ownership of land to swaying constituents in contests for office. For the lawyer, oratory was the escalator that could lift a political candidate to higher ground.
