See also: JahannamDiscussion of a problem of hell is not common in Islam. However, Edip Yüksel recognises the contradiction between Allah the merciful and eternal torture. He argues that evildoers will be punished in hell for an appropriate period then cease to exist, so their suffering (which is graphically described in the Quran and therefore must happen) will not be eternal, but only a just amount.
