Private Security Industry In South Africa

The private security industry in South Africa is an industry providing guarding, monitoring, armed reaction, escorting, investigating and other security-related services to private individuals and companies in the country. South Africa's private security industry is one of the largest in the world. This is attributed by some to the country's former high levels of crime to a lack of public funds from Parliament towards the South African Police Service (SAPS) or to an increasing trend in many countries towards government outsourcing of certain security functions .

However, due to the success of the 2010 FIFA Football World Cup, watched by over a billion international television viewers, plus coverage in other worldwide media, public confidence levels in both the SAPS and in private security companies have improved slightly.

Because of a widespread lack of compliance with registration requirements, it is difficult to determine the number of actual players in the sector, however, the PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) comments that of the approximate 1,9 million people actually registered, only 421,534 are 'active' i.e. serving in the industry. (As of May 2012).

Famous quotes containing the words private, security, industry, south and/or africa:

    If private men are obliged to perform the offices of government, to protect the weak and dispense justice, then the government becomes only a hired man, or clerk, to perform menial or indifferent services.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Of course we will continue to work for cheaper electricity in the homes and on the farms of America; for better and cheaper transportation; for low interest rates; for sounder home financing; for better banking; for the regulation of security issues; for reciprocal trade among nations and for the wiping out of slums. And my friends, for all of these we have only begun to fight.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

    He had much industry at setting out,
    Much boisterous courage, before loneliness
    Had driven him crazed;
    For meditations upon unknown thought
    Make human intercourse grow less and less....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    There were metal detectors on the staff-room doors and Hernandez usually had a drawer full of push-daggers, nunchuks, stun-guns, knucks, boot-knives, and whatever else the detectors had picked up. Like Friday morning at a South Miami high school.
    William Gibson (b. 1948)

    Day by day we hear the cry of AFRICA FOR THE AFRICANS. This cry has become a positive, determined one. It is a cry that is raised simultaneously the world over because of the universal oppression that affects the Negro.
    Marcus Garvey (1887–1940)
