Famous quotes containing the words prince, friedrich, hesse and/or rhine:

A wholly materialistic city is nothing but a dream incarnate. Venice is the world’s unconscious, a miser’s glittering hoard, guarded by a Beast whose eyes are made of white agate, and by a saint who is really a prince who has just slain a dragon.
    Mary McCarthy (1912–1989)

As high as mind stands above nature, so high does the state stand above physical life. Man must therefore venerate the state as a secular deity.... The march of God in the world, that is what the State is.
    —Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

In each individual the spirit is made flesh, in each one the whole of creation suffers, in each one a Savior is crucified.
    —Hermann Hesse (1877–1962)

Ah, there should be a young man, ein schone Junge carrying Blumen, a bouquet of roses. There should be cold Rhine wine and Strauss waltzes, and on the long way home kisses in the shadow of an archway, like a Cinderella.
    Laurence Stallings (1894–1968)
