Primary Sources of Energy

Phototrophs: Light is absorbed in photo receptors and transformed into chemical energy.
Chemotrophs: Bond energy is released from a chemical compound.

The freed energy is stored as potential energy in ATP, carbohydrates, lipids or proteins. Eventually, the energy is used for life processes as moving, growth and reproduction.

Some bacteria can alternate phototrophy and chemotrophy, depending on availability of light.

Famous quotes containing the words primary sources of, primary, sources and/or energy:

A fact is a proposition of which the verification by an appeal to the primary sources of our knowledge or to experience is direct and simple. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

All my energy and attention were devoted to trying to help her solve her problems. Unfortunately I didn’t have much success.
    Arthur Miller (b. 1915)
