Academics

The school offers basic Kentucky core curriculum and many other extra-curricular classes. Advanced Placement courses are also offered in certain academic areas. These classes are taught by the PHS faculty, KET (Kentucky Education Television) Learning Courses, and the Kentucky Virtual High School. There are also optional classes offered through a dual credit course program joined with Big Sandy Community and Technical College. The students are graded on a 4-point GPA scale.

The teachers at Prestonsburg High School are divided up into departments. The Language Arts Department consists of Tim Blakenship (English), Anita Stumbo (English), Dr. Charles Johnson (English), Ms. Newsome (English), and Gloria Newsome (Spanish). The Math Department consists Melissa Willis, Tina Crum, Sharon Vaughn, Ephriam O' Quinn, Kanessa Richie, and Edwina Ousley. The Practical Living Department consists of Jack Pack, James DeRossett, Terri McCoy, and Jennifer Roberts. The Resource Department consists of John DeRossett, Donna Huff, Carolyn Ford, and Tonya Porter. The Science Department at PHS consists of Jim Tom Allen, Solomon Kilburn, Roy Penix, Amy Howard, and Georgeann Parsons. The Social Studies Department consists of Bobby Hamilton, Lori Bricken, Jackie Day Crisp, Philip Price, and Karen Slone. Music, Drama, and Band is taught by Greta Gilbert and the Library is run by Jamie Adams.
