The series won the Eisner Award for Best New Series for 2001 and Brian Michael Bendis won the Best Writer Eisner Award in 2002 and 2003.

Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker, whom Bendis and Oeming view as "amazing crime writers," created Gotham Central, which Bendis and Oeming view as one of many Powers-like comics influenced by their work. Famous quotes containing the words recognition and, recognition and/or influence:

While you are nurturing your newborn, you need someone to nurture you, whether it is with healthful drinks while you’re nursing, or with words of recognition and encouragement as you talk about your feelings. In this state of continual giving to your infant—whether it is nourishment or care or love—you are easily drained, and you need to be replenished from sources outside yourself so that you will have reserves to draw from.
    Sally Placksin (20th century)

Justice begins with the recognition of the necessity of sharing. Elias Canetti (b. 1905)

A husband who submits to his wife’s yoke is justly held an object of ridicule. A woman’s influence ought to be entirely concealed.
    HonorĂ© De Balzac (1799–1850)
