Powder Coating - Types of Powder Coatings

Types of Powder Coatings

There are two main categories of powder coatings: thermosets and thermoplastics. The thermosetting variety incorporates a cross-linker into the formulation. When the powder is baked, it reacts with other chemical groups in the powder to polymerize, improving the performance properties. The thermoplastic variety does not undergo any additionactions during the baking process, but rather only flows out into the final coating.

The most common polymers used are polyester, polyurethane, polyester-epoxy (known as hybrid), straight epoxy (fusion bonded epoxy) and acrylics.

Production:

  1. The polymer granules are mixed with hardener, pigments and other powder ingredients in a mixer
  2. The mixture is heated in an extruder
  3. The extruded mixture is rolled flat, cooled and broken into small chips
  4. The chips are milled and sieved to make a fine powder

Famous quotes containing the words types of, types and/or powder:

Our children evaluate themselves based on the opinions we have of them. When we use harsh words, biting comments, and a sarcastic tone of voice, we plant the seeds of self-doubt in their developing minds.... Children who receive a steady diet of these types of messages end up feeling powerless, inadequate, and unimportant. They start to believe that they are bad, and that they can never do enough.
    Stephanie Martson (20th century)

As for types like my own, obscurely motivated by the conviction that our existence was worthless if we didn’t make a turning point of it, we were assigned to the humanities, to poetry, philosophy, painting—the nursery games of humankind, which had to be left behind when the age of science began. The humanities would be called upon to choose a wallpaper for the crypt, as the end drew near.
    Saul Bellow (b. 1915)

    Despite my asbestos gloves,
the cough is filling me with black,
and a red powder seeps through my veins....
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
