Portuguese Seventh-day Adventist Church (Toronto)

The Portuguese Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Seventh-day Adventist church serving the Portuguese community of Toronto, Canada. It is located on College Street just west of Bathurst. The church was originally built as College Street Baptist Church in 1889. The Baptist congregation had been founded in 1872 and had originally met at College and Lippincott, the current location of St. George Lutheran Church. In 1970 the church was sold to the Portuguese Seventh-day Adventist congregation, the area having become the centre of Toronto's Portuguese community. Some time between 2004–2007, the church was sold to a developer who is said to be turning the church into 4 ultra-luxury condo units. As of August 2009 construction still has not been completed. The congregation is currently meeting every Saturday at the High Park Korean United Church building located at 260 High Park Ave, Toronto, ON.

Famous quotes containing the word church:

He prayed more deeply for simple selflessness than he had ever prayed before—and, feeling an uprush of grace in the very intention, shed the night in his heart and called it light. And walking out of the little church he felt confirmed in not only the worth of his whispered prayer but in the realization, as well, that Christ had become man and not some bell-shaped Corinthian column with volutes for veins and a mandala of stone foliage for a heart.
    Alexander Theroux (b. 1940)
