Portrait of A Man With A Medal of Cosimo The Elder - History

History

The origin of the painting is almost as mysterious as its model. While it is unknown who commissioned it or where it spent the first century of its existence, it passed at some point to Carlo de' Medici. Upon Carlo de' Medici's death in 1666, it entered the collection of the Uffizi. The painting was restored in 1991.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

I am not a literary man.... I am a man of science, and I am interested in that branch of Anthropology which deals with the history of human speech.
    —J.A.H. (James Augustus Henry)

In nature, all is useful, all is beautiful. It is therefore beautiful, because it is alive, moving, reproductive; it is therefore useful, because it is symmetrical and fair. Beauty will not come at the call of a legislature, nor will it repeat in England or America its history in Greece. It will come, as always, unannounced, and spring up between the feet of brave and earnest men.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

I assure you that in our next class we will concern ourselves solely with the history of Egypt, and not with the more lurid and non-curricular subject of living mummies.
Griffin Jay, and Reginald LeBorg. Prof. Norman (Frank Reicher)
