History
PICA was founded in 1996 by Kristy Edmunds, formerly the Director of the Portland Art Museum's "Art on the Edge" program. Edmunds left PICA in 2005 to become art director for the Melbourne International Arts Festival. The gallery was housed at Boora Architects from its founding until about 2001, and then moved to the headquarters of Wieden + Kennedy in Northwest Portland. PICA remained at Wieden + Kennedy, where they received discounted rent, until 2012 when they moved to Downtown Portland on Tenth Avenue. The new space had 10,000 square feet (930 m2) of space after $300,000 in renovations.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“All things are moral. That soul, which within us is a sentiment, outside of us is a law. We feel its inspiration; out there in history we can see its fatal strength.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The greatest horrors in the history of mankind are not due to the ambition of the Napoleons or the vengeance of the Agamemnons, but to the doctrinaire philosophers. The theories of the sentimentalist Rousseau inspired the integrity of the passionless Robespierre. The cold-blooded calculations of Karl Marx led to the judicial and business-like operations of the Cheka.”
—Aleister Crowley (18751947)
“The principle that human nature, in its psychological aspects, is nothing more than a product of history and given social relations removes all barriers to coercion and manipulation by the powerful.”
—Noam Chomsky (b. 1928)
