Portland Golf Club

The Portland Golf Club is a golf club located in the unincorporated Raleigh Hills area, between Portland and Beaverton, Oregon, USA. This club was formally established in the winter of 1913 when a group of nine businessmen assembled to form a new club after leaving their respective clubs.

The present site was chosen due to its relation to the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway's interurban railroad line that supplied frequent passenger service to the site as automobiles and roads were scarce in those days. The PGA Championship was held at the club in 1946, which Ben Hogan won. The club also hosted the 7th Ryder Cup Matches on November 1–2, 1947 with the United States defeating the Great Britain by a score of 11 to 1.

Famous quotes containing the words portland, golf and/or club:

It is said that a carpenter building a summer hotel here ... declared that one very clear day he picked out a ship coming into Portland Harbor and could distinctly see that its cargo was West Indian rum. A county historian avers that it was probably an optical delusion, the result of looking so often through a glass in common use in those days.
—For the State of New Hampshire, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

Years ago we discovered the exact point, the dead center of middle age. It occurs when you are too young to take up golf and too old to rush up to the net.
    Franklin Pierce Adams (1881–1960)

The adjustment of qualities is so perfect between men and women, and each is so necessary to the other, that the idea of inferiority is absurd.
