Port Hudson, Louisiana - History

History

In 1833, one of the first railroads in the United States ran from Port Hudson to Clinton. Clinton was the entrepĂ´t for the produce of much of the region, which, sent by rail, was transferred to steamboats at Port Hudson. The rails and crossties of this track have long since been removed. Location of the tracks and the old town can be seen at the bend of the Mississippi River (view 1864 map).

Old Port Hudson was incorporated as a town in 1838.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)

When the history of guilt is written, parents who refuse their children money will be right up there in the Top Ten.
    Erma Brombeck (20th century)

Well, for us, in history where goodness is a rare pearl, he who was good almost takes precedence over he who was great.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)
