Crest, Motto and Coat of Arms

In 1963 Port Arthur acquired a new coat of arms from the College of Arms in London. The original crest depicted a wooden fort with wide-open gate with the motto "Gateway to the West." The new coat of arms, designed by J.P. Brooke-Little, Bluemantle Pursuivant of Arms, featured a heraldic gateway in a framing sun, wavy bars representing water, blue fleurs de lys, a red cross, a lion holding a tree, a moose and a wolf.

Famous quotes containing the words motto, coat and/or arms:

    I always say, my motto is “Art for my sake.” If I want to write, I write—and if I don’t want to, I won’t. The difficulty is to find exactly the form one’s passion—work is produced by passion with me ... Mwants to take.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

    I can sit up half the night
    With some friend that has the wit
    Not to allow his looks to tell
    When I am unintelligible.
    Fifteen apparitions have I seen;
    The worst a coat upon a coat-hanger.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    Let arms yield to the toga, let the [victor’s] laurel yield to the [orator’s] tongue.
    Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 B.C.)
