Legacy

In 2005, Spin cited the album as a "high-water mark for goth's musical evolution." NME described Pornography as "arguably the album that invented goth". Slant Magazine listed the album at number 79 on its list of the best albums of the 1980s. In 2011, NME listed Pornography at number 6 on its "50 Darkest Albums Ever" list.
