“The North will at least preserve your flesh for you; Northerners are pale for good and all. Theres very little difference between a dead Swede and a young man whos had a bad night. But the Colonial is full of maggots the day after he gets off the boat.”

“We urgently need a debate about the best ways of supporting families in modern America, without blinders that prevent us from seeing the full extent of dependence and interdependence in American life. As long as we pretend that only poor or abnormal families need outside assistance, we will shortchange poor families, overcompensate rich ones, and fail to come up with effective policies for helping families in the middle.”
—Stephanie Coontz (20th century)
“Vodka is our enemy, so lets finish it off.”
—Russian saying popular in the Soviet period, trans. by Vladimir Ivanovich Shlyakov (1993)
“When a person says, I see a yellowish-orange after-image, he is saying something like this: There is something going on which is like what is going on when I have my eyes open, am awake, and there is an orange illuminated in good light in front of me, that is, when I really see an orange.”
—John Jamieson Carswell Smart (b. 1920)
