Polo (confectionery) - Advertising

Advertising

In 1995 a major advertising campaign began through TV adverts. The adverts were animated by Aardman Animations and showed Polos in a factory, the leading advert showed a scared Polo without a hole in the factory on a conveyor belt try to escape, but he gets restrained where the machine pokes the hole out of him. The adverts were conceived as being rather dark. Polo adverts continued to be humorously dark, and sometimes rude.

Polo experimented with other sorts of advertising in the late 1990s, as in 1998 they teamed up with PolyGram for a compilation album, Cool Grooves, which reached #12 in the UK Compilation Chart on 5 September that year.

Polo mints also play a part in Blackadder: Back & Forth where Lord Blackadder travels back in time to the Elizabethan era, where he ends up in a situation where Elizabeth I is about to order him to execution, when some Polo mints fall to the ground from his pocket. Elizabeth I tries a Polo. Pleased, she spares Lord Blackadder's life.
