Politics and Government of North Carolina - State Legislature

State Legislature

The North Carolina General Assembly is the state legislature. Like all other states except for Nebraska, the legislature is bicameral, consisting of the 120-member North Carolina House of Representatives and the 50-member North Carolina Senate. Both the state House and the state Senate currently have Republican majorities. The lieutenant governor is the ex officio president of the state Senate. The Senate also elects its own president pro tempore and the House elects its speaker.

Famous quotes containing the words state and/or legislature:

    What thou art is mine;
    Our state cannot be severed, we are one,
    One flesh; to lose thee were to lose myself.
    John Milton (1608–1674)

    It seemed monstrous to our intolerant youth that “poor white folksy” men should have an equal right with gentlemen, born and bred, in deciding who should represent the county in the Legislature and the district in Congress.
    Marion Harland (1830–1922)
